In each town, there is an association/committee which, in collaboration with the municipal administrations, maintains friendships and brotherhood ties in Europe, fosters a sense of belonging to a common European destiny, organises and manages the network’s events, and promotes European projects.
Twinning arrangements between European cities have played, and continue to play, a positive and proactive role for the European Union. In line with Jean Bareth’s vision, they have fostered friendship, cooperation and mutual awareness among the peoples. They have made it possible to carry forward the dream of peaceful and civilised coexistence among nations, despite the diversity of ethnic groups, cultures and religions. This diversity is understood not as a renunciation of one’s own identity, but as a source of inspiration – something to be understood and appreciated. A diversity that stands as a central pillar of integration among the peoples of Europe.
